Neighborhood Highlight

Conveniently located about one mile northeast of Uptown, the urban center of Charlotte, Plaza Midwood is often described as one of Charlotte’s most eclectic neighborhoods. Plaza Midwood was established in the 1920s as a “streetcar suburb,” and the area has experienced dramatic growth after reinvestment in the mid-1990s transformed unused buildings into funky restaurants, art galleries, and shops. Corps members who are looking for an interesting and diverse setting in Charlotte will enjoy everything that Plaza Midwood has to offer. Plaza Midwood’s neighborhood school, Shamrock Gardens Elementary, feeds into Teach For America placement schools at the middle and high school level.

Living Here

Charlotte’s unique character is undeniable. Our city’s distinct mix of small town charm in a rapidly growing metropolis provides an exciting yet welcoming atmosphere. A city that remembers its past while looking toward the future, Charlotte is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. In just a decade, its population has increased 37%.

With 240 corps members teaching in 40 schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district, Teach For America reaches nearly 15,000 students in the region each year. Most of our corps members are clustered at schools across the city, with a high concentration of corps members to the west and east of downtown. In several instances, as many as 10 to 20 corps members teach in a single school.

Outside of the classroom, corps members discover the culture of Charlotte through performances, gallery crawls, basketball games, afternoons in the park, and trivia nights at local pubs. The occasional weekend outing to Lake Norman or the U.S. National Whitewater Center offers an alternative to the sights and sounds of Uptown Charlotte.
