Get to Know Lincoln Elementary School

Lincoln Elementary was the lowest performing elementary school in the West Contra Costa Unified School District and one of the lowest performing in the state. In partnership with the district, Teach For America and Lincoln Elementary staff co-wrote a grant to get $3 million in funding to implement drastic changes to the school’s structure. Seven corps members and four alumni teach at Lincoln. They collaborated with colleagues to revamp the school’s curriculum. Two corps members organized evenings to speak with parents about how to help their students increase their reading abilities, and math skills. One of them, Kirsten Scheu, also founded a school-wide attendance tracking method, and classroom rewards system which has improved attendance. Through the perseverance of the staff and community, Lincoln Elementary is setting a new bar of excellence for all its students.
