Where Corps Members Teach

More than 90% of Baltimore principals surveyed report that Teach For America corps members have made a positive impact in their schools. So it's not surprising that Baltimore school leaders have welcomed our recent expansion in and around the city. We now have corps members teaching in 103 schools at the pre-K, elementary, and secondary school level, which together include more than half of all Baltimore city and county schools.

Get to Know Commodore John Rogers Elementary and Middle School

Commodore John Rogers Elementary and Middle School is located in Butchers Hill, in southeast Baltimore. John Rogers' staff, corps members, and alumni continually strive to create a positive and supportive school community, which includes parents and family of students. In lieu of parent-teacher conferences to discuss report cards, John Rogers use what they call “Student Lead Conferences.” Three times a year, each student is required to make a 30-minute presentation for his or her family, detailing his or her progress and achievement in various subject areas. The efforts of the community have helped school attendance to increase steadily, from 89% for the 2009-2010 school year, to 94% for 2010-2011. More than 95% of students at the school met reading participation and mathematics participation in the 2010-2011 school year. And 71% of seventh graders tested as proficient in reading in 2011, up from 43.2% in 2009, while 81.3% of fourth graders tested as proficient in math in 2011, up from 53.3% in 2009.
