Teach For America Placement Schools
Where Corps Members Teach
We currently place corps members in six counties throughout the Black Belt region of Alabama. This rural area bore witness to some of the most significant events of the Civil Rights Movement, the effects of which still linger. On average more than 91% of students in our partner school districts are considered low-income, and 88% of the student populations are African American. Only one in five low-income students in Alabama exceed grade level standards in reading. In comparison, half of their more affluent peers surpass those same standards.
The rural location of the Teach for America • Alabama region affords corps members the ability to quickly and comfortably integrate themselves into their students’ communities. This unique opportunity allows corps members to become part of their students' lives in a variety of meaningful ways.
Get to Know Greensboro High School
As part of his new community, Ryan Jessen – one of eight corps members teaching in Greensboro, AL – has extended his impact beyond the classroom. In January 2011, Greensboro High School’s boys’ basketball team, with Ryan as an assistant coach, made local headlines when they won a championship tournament for the first time in Greensboro history.
