Certification and Testing

All St. Louis corps members have the opportunity to not only gain full certification by the end of their two year commitments, but also a master's degree. Corps members teach under a Provisional Certificate, which is valid throughout their two year commitments. Provisional certificates are nonrenewable and can ultimately lead to full certification. In order to qualify for the provisional certificate, all corps members are required to enroll in at least nine units of certification coursework through one of our university partners during their first year of teaching and complete an academic contract. Corps members have the option to earn credit through Buena Vista University for completing the summer training institute, which can help fulfill these requirements.

Corps members who are interested in full certification must take The PRAXIS Series: Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers at the end of their two years of teaching. This test is not required for those who are not interested in obtaining full certification, but is highly recommended.

In partnership with Teach For America • St. Louis, the University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL) offers programs that can be used toward a master's in secondary, elementary, and special education. Classes take place once a week for three hours and are taught as a cohort. UMSL courses are designed to accommodate corps members’ schedules as best as possible.
