What does it mean for you to be a part of the 2008 Las Vegas Valley corps?

Being a 2008 corps member in the Las Vegas Valley means more than just being a part of a larger national movement. It means being among the select few who are here to help this region grow, to change the prospects that our students are currently faced with. In addition, it means letting people know that good and amazing things can and are happening here in the Las Vegas Valley besides winning the jackpot at the casino. The “jackpot” for me is seeing my three- to five-year-olds excited and ready to tackle whatever kindergarten throws their way.

What are you hoping to accomplish with your students?

I want the world for my students but I know that it will need to happen one day at a time. That’s not nearly fast enough for me, but it will do. I want my four- and five-year-olds to leave pre-kindergarten knowing their letters and numbers and everything else in between so they can be successful in kindergarten. For my three-year-olds, I want them to leave my pre-kindergarten class and enter their classroom next year saying, “Oh, I know that already. I’m really good at it. Ms. LaPorte taught it to me.”
