Schools
Currently, Atlanta corps members are placed in 88 elementary, middle, and high schools within the Atlanta Public School (APS) and the Fulton County School systems, Over 90 percent of our corps members are clustered in schools with their fellow corps members and alumni. This clustering is continually acknowledged by corps members as a significant contributor to their success and satisfaction.
The Atlanta Public Schools system serves more than 49,000 students within the Atlanta city limits. Corps members currently teach in 72 of the 96 APS schools. Teach For America • Atlanta has partnered with Atlanta Public Schools since 2000, when superintendent Dr. Beverly Hall was named APS superintendent. After working with Teach For America in New York City and in Newark, New Jersey, Dr. Hall decided she wanted to incorporate Teach For America into the school reform package she was developing in Atlanta. The school reform model, Project GRAD (Graduation Really Achieves Dreams), has recently been implemented in two clusters within the Atlanta school system. Just over 35 percent of Atlanta schools use the Project GRAD model. Over the last six years, more than 15 Atlanta corps members have been named Project GRAD Teachers of the Year.
As Teach For America • Atlanta expands its size and impact, our corps members and alumni are increasingly leading district and school initiatives. Corps members and alumni are serving as teachers in the single gender schools initiative, and as principals in two of the districts newest high schools. Dr. Hall remains a strong supporter of Teach For America, and she has worked to bring over 700 corps members to teach in Atlanta Public Schools since 2000. With our corps members heightened presence and success, our impact in Atlanta Public Schools is poised to continue to grow.
The Fulton County School system serves just over 88,000 students in the greater Atlanta community, and Fulton County is a rapidly growing school system with a diverse student population. Currently, corps members are teaching in 16 different Fulton County schools that serve low-income Hispanic and African-American students. While Fulton County is a large urban district with a racially, ethnically, and economically diverse school system, our corps members are placed in the system’s lowest achieving schools. Teach For America • Atlanta began its partnership with Fulton County Schools during the 2006-07 school year, and corps members and district officials are eager to continue to expand this partnership. As Fulton County Schools continue to expand, corps members will continue to be placed with a greater frequency in Fulton County’s elementary, middle, and high schools.
