Brenda grew up in a small town in Guatemala. “I remember wanting to do well in school, I wanted to learn and go to college, but I was unable to due to a medical issue. Brenda’s illness led her to move to the United States. She came to visit Las Vegas in the 80’s and was drawn to the many opportunities she could have here. She began working in the hospitality industry cleaning hotel rooms. “I am very grateful for that job- however it was incredibly difficult. It took a very heavy toll on my body.”

“When I heard about the opportunity to have my son join Mr. Salkowe’s program, I was immediately drawn in. Mr. Salkowe was a different kind of teacher. Usually, my experience when I would visit my kids’ schools was that I didn’t feel welcomed- that I was in the way. Mr. Salkowe made me feel like my voice mattered. He believed in my kids like I had never seen anyone believe in them.”

“The first time we walked into the potential school building, I asked myself- this is going to be a school?” It was an abandoned, dusty supermarket. I didn’t know how Mr. Salkowe was going to turn this into a school- but what I did know is that I trusted him.” Following that site visit, Brenda called some of her friends from work to help her clean the building. “We knew that this was an investment for our kids.” A few days later, the building was clean. What started as a volunteer activity turned into a small business with the help and support of Mr. Salkowe.

“Look at me now- I have a small business, I bought a house, I have a car and I am able to provide for my kids in ways that I never thought possible. All three of my kids are currently in college and I have Mr. Salkowe to thank for that. I am living my American dream. Where I am now is possible because Mr. Salkowe believed and gave me the resources and opportunities, just how he has done for hundreds of students over the years. There are no words to describe what Mr. Salkowe and the entire team at Equipo mean to me. All I can say is thank you.”

Often times, teachers like Mr. Salkowe join Teach For America not knowing the dreams that they are able to make come true.

Brenda creció en un pequeño pueblo de Guatemala. “Recuerdo que quería tener un buen desempeño en la escuela, quería aprender e ir a la universidad, pero debido a un problema médico que tenía era muy dificil enfocarme en mis estudios.” Su enfermedad física la llevó a mudarse a los Estados Unidos. “La primera vez que entramos al edificio, me pregunté: ¿esto va a ser una escuela? Era un viejo supermercado lleno de polvo. No sabía cómo el Sr. Salkowe iba a convertir esto en una escuela, pero loque sí sabía es que confiaba en él “. Después de esa visita, Brenda llamó a algunos de sus amigos del trabajo para que la ayudaran a limpiar el edificio. “Sabíamos que se trataba de una inversión para nuestros hijos.” Unos días después, el edificio estaba limpio y de este voluntariado nacio un negocio. El senor Salkowe me ayudo a sacar mi licensia, seguro y empezar mi propio negocio. “Mírame ahora, tengo un negiocio, compré una casa, tengo carro y puedo mantener a mis hijos de una manera que nunca pensé que fuera posible. Los 3 de mis hijos están actualmente en la universidad y tengo que agradecerle al Sr. Salkowe por eso. “Estoy viviendo mi sueño americano. Dónde estoy ahora es posible porque el Sr. Salkowe creyó en mi y me dio una oportunidad, tal como lo ha hecho con cientos de estudiantes a lo largo de los años. No hay palabras para describir lo que el Sr. Salkowe y todos en la escuela Equipo significan para mí. Todo lo que puedo decir es gracias.”
