The Rising Leaders Fellowship is a diverse, national coalition of more than 100 student leaders working to expand educational opportunity on campuses and in communities. Over 12 months, each fellow designs and leads a high-impact project, builds a team among their peers, collaborates with a local mentor, and attends a national training forum, the Rising Leaders Summit—all while drawing energy and inspiration from a national network of fellows and fellowship alumni.
The Rising Leaders Fellowship focuses on three leadership tools that prepare fellows for short and long-term impact—a story, a network, and a plan.
Proud Partners of the Rising Leaders Fellowship
Transformational leaders do not lead for the sake of leading; they lead from a place of deep conviction about a problem or opportunity. The Rising Leaders Fellowship helps fellows shape their passion for educational equity into a compelling narrative—a story that will inspire others to act and from which fellows can draw inspiration in the face of challenges.
The best leaders surround themselves with allies who inspire, challenge, and sustain their efforts. The Rising Leaders Fellowship expands its fellows' network of allies and ally organizations, thereby growing opportunities to collaborate.
Rising Leaders Fellows commit to tangibly address the disparities they see in education. The fellowship challenges students to hone and lead a plan of action that will measurably expand education opportunities in their community or on campus.
Rising Leader Fellows are college sophomores and juniors with an existing passion for educational equity. They present outstanding leadership potential, and distinguish themselves with their desire to channel their passion into concrete actions. The 2012 Rising Leaders Fellows are currently leading projects toward a wide range of outcomes, including school resourcing, college preparedness, and advocacy—all aimed to expand educational opportunities for students in their communities.
“The network of committed education reformers, from my mentor, to peers, to the Teach For America team has been inspiring and continues to empower me to do better.”
- Karim Abouelnaga, 2012 Rising Leaders Fellow
“My experience in the fellowship has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding things I've taken on during my college career. It's pushed me to become a different kind of leader, one who inspires and encourages growth for everyone they encounter. Also, it has introduced me to an entire network of young adults who are fighting similar battles in their communities and who are accomplishing really admirable things.”
- Lydia Herrera, 2012 Rising Leaders Fellow
Our Fellow Mentors
Rising Leaders mentors are Teach For America staff members, corps members, and alumni that work closely with fellows throughout the 12-month fellowship. Mentors advise fellows as they work on their fellowship projects and provide fellows with access to a multi-sector force of Teach For America alumni and organizational partners.
"I have felt very inspired by the ambitious and impactful work that Chance Craig has put forth on his project. He is so passionate about creating educational opportunities for his community in the Mississippi Delta. I have helped to connect him with professors on Brown’s campus who are doing service work in the Mississippi Delta and helped him think through best next steps of how he can leverage his network towards his overall goals."
- Angela Callado, Dallas Corps Member '09 and Rising Leaders Fellowship Mentor
