Fairfax County Public Schools leader to oversee Teacher Leadership Development for new teachers

Washington, DC, October 25, 2012—Teach For America announced today thatJay McClain, a 22 year-veteran educator, has been hired as Vice President, Teacher Leadership Development for Teach for America-D.C. Region. As vice president, McClain will manage a team of teacher coaches, provide leadership in pushing for transformational change in corps member classrooms, and build relationships with key district and community partners.
McClain, a Northern Virginia native, started his career in education as a 1990 corps member in New Orleans and has worked in the Fairfax County Public schools for the past 14 years. He began as an educator and then principal of two different elementary schools, before transitioning into the role of Director of a 24,000 student region within the school district. His region was comprised of 26 schools serving low-income students. McClain has led staff development of teachers and administrators on topics including coaching, use of data to drive decision-making, and strategic planning. Jay graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science in Public Policy Studies and a holds a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from the University of Virginia, where he is currently completing his doctoral work.

Teach For America currently has 320 corps members in the region, serving 20,000 students in D.C. and Prince Georges County. Alongside these educators, 1600 alumni call the area home, working to ensure educational equity in a variety of leadership positions across sectors. This fall, there are 10,000 Teach For America first- and second-year corps members working in 46 regions across the country.
