CHARLOTTE, NC, November 7, 2008—The 2008 Wachovia Championship, on behalf of Champions for Education, announced today a $1 million donation to the tournament's primary charitable beneficiary, Teach For America. Champions for Education is the nonprofit host organization that manages and operates the Wachovia Championship.
In its first six years, from tournament week proceeds, the Wachovia Championship has donated more than $9.4 million to Teach For America and other charities. This year's overall charity contribution is $1.95 million.
Teach For America is the national corps of top college graduates who commit to teach for two years in under-resourced public schools and become lifelong leaders in the pursuit of educational equity.
"We have been able to provide consistent support to Teach For America for the past six years, thanks to our volunteers, corporate partners, the members of Quail Hollow Club and the thousands of patrons who attend our tournament each year," said Kym Hougham, Wachovia Championship executive director. "To see the positive influence Teach For America is having in communities is very rewarding, and we continue to be proud of Teach For America's efforts."
Today, 6,200 Teach For America corps members are reaching 400,000 students in 29 urban and rural regions nationwide, while more than 14,000 alumni are working in education, policy, law, medicine and other professional sectors to effect the broader changes needed to bring about educational equity in our country.
"We are honored to have been the primary beneficiary of the tournament since its inception and are grateful for the Wachovia Championship's longtime partnership in our efforts to expand educational opportunity for children growing up in low-income communities," said Wendy Kopp, founder and chief executive officer of Teach For America. "The tournament's generous support is invaluable as we work to channel the talent and energy of our nation's future leaders towards ending educational inequity."
"For the past six years, one of this tournament's goals has been to help Teach For America realize its vision that all children receive an excellent education," said Tournament Chairman Mac Everett. "We have seen great progress in this area since our partnership and continue to be proud of our affiliation with such a positive organization."
"Every child deserves equal access to excellent teachers and a quality education," said Shannon McFayden, Wachovia's director of Human Resources and Corporate Relations. "We are proud that the Wachovia Championship has selected as its primary charitable beneficiary a nonprofit organization that recognizes the potential of all of our children. Wachovia Corporation has partnered with Teach For America for the past six years and has witnessed the organization's positive influence in our communities."
