NEW YORK CITY, June 25, 2010—Teach For America announced today that Vince Roig, chairman of the board of Helios Education Foundation, has been named to its National Board of Directors.

“Vince and Helios Education Foundation have been such strong public champions and supporters of our work to expand educational opportunity in Phoenix and Miami,” said Wendy Kopp, founder and CEO of Teach For America. "We are thrilled that he is deepening his engagement with Teach For America, and know that he will provide invaluable guidance and support for our efforts to grow our impact nationally."

Prior to forming Helios Education Foundation, Roig served for more than 20 years as chairman of the board, president and CEO of Southwest Student Services Corporation, a full-service provider of student loan products and services to students, families and schools in Arizona, Florida and nationally. While with Southwest, he led its evolution from a small secondary-market lender to one of the largest independent student loan providers and servicers in the country.

“I’m really humbled and honored to serve on the board of Teach For America and am excited to be able to broaden my passion for not only investing in education, but for changing lives through education,” Roig said. “There’s great synergy between Helios’ mission and Teach For America’s goals, and I believe that alignment and common understanding will create even more opportunities for students to excel and succeed in postsecondary education.”

Roig serves or has served on the boards of numerous organizations in Arizona and Florida, including Greater Phoenix Leadership, the Phoenix Aviation Advisory Board, Take Stock in Children, Valley of the Sun United Way, Valley of the Sun United Way Foundation, the Phoenix Art Museum and the Arizona College Scholarship Foundation. He received his B.S. in secondary education from Athens College and his M.S. in secondary education from Richmond College of the City University of New York.

Roig joins 26 current members of Teach For America’s National Board, including leaders from the business, media, and academic sectors.
