DURHAM, N.C., July 26, 2011—Teach For America today announced Robyn Schryer Fehrman as the executive director of its Eastern North Carolina region. Fehrman will oversee all aspects of the organization’s regional operations. Teach For America is a national nonprofit that recruits, trains, and supports top college graduates and professionals who commit to teach for two years in under-resourced schools and become lifelong leaders in the pursuit of educational equity.
Teach For America has placed teachers, also called corps members, in Eastern North Carolina since 1990, the very first year of the organization’s history. In the 2011-12 school year, roughly 160 Teach For America corps members will collectively impact over 8,500 students. Additionally, more than 400 alumni will work from all professional fields to expand opportunities for kids growing up in low-income communities. Teach For America’s Eastern North Carolina region is based in Durham.
“I am honored to lead Teach For America’s regional efforts in Eastern North Carolina,” Fehrman said. “In the short run, our corps members have an immediate, positive impact on student achievement. In the long run, they become leaders in education and other sectors to expand opportunities for kids growing up in low-income communities. I am excited that Teach For America can serve as an additional source of effective teachers for high-need schools in Eastern North Carolina, and I believe that, working together as a community, we can ensure that all students achieve at high levels and have the opportunity to realize their dreams.”
Fehrman brings nearly 15 years of social justice work in Eastern North Carolina to her new role at Teach For America. Most recently, she served as a community program officer at the Triangle Community Foundation, where she developed innovative initiatives to increase philanthropic giving throughout the region and managed grant making in civic engagement and youth leadership development.
Additionally, Fehrman has served on several regional boards and task forces focused on education, public health, environmental advocacy, and philanthropy. In 2009, Fehrman was a recipient of the Triangle Business Journal’s 40 under 40 Leadership Awards. She received both her B.A. in English and her M.P.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She lives in Durham with her husband and daughter.
