Today, 4,400 corps members are working in 25 regions to ensure their students have the educational opportunities they deserve.

Our placement regions

Teach For America currently places corps members in 26 urban and rural areas where they are needed most - and will be expanding to additional regions in 2008. School districts are asking Teach For America to bring more corps members to their communities because of the impact they have during their two years and because they are a rare leadership pipeline for long-term reform efforts.

You will find unique cultural opportunities, challenging professional experiences, and corps member friends and colleagues in every site. To learn more about each region, click on a name below.

Regional assignment

Applicants invited to attend a final interview indicate their preferences for regions, grade levels, and subject areas, and receive their assignment once they are accepted to Teach For America. Teach For America works to meet applicants' preferences while meeting districts' needs and adhering to district and state requirements. In 2007, we were able to place 95 percent of our accepted applicants in one of their highly preferred sites.

Applicants invited to an interview day submit their regional preferences in one of two ways:

  • Individuals who are flexible can choose options such as “send me to any region,” or “send me to any urban region.” We encourage individuals to evaluate their personal level of flexibility and to consider choosing one of these options, which allow us to assign them where they are most needed.
  • Individuals with more specific regional preferences can rank each region separately as highly preferred, preferred, or less preferred and can numerically rank regions in order of preference. They also can indicate any special circumstances they would like us to consider, such as being placed in a region with a spouse. We ask all applicants who rank regions separately to give special consideration to Greater New Orleans, which has a particularly urgent need for corps members as it rebuilds after Hurricane Katrina. We also encourage applicants to consider being part of an expansion site.

Expansion sites

Given the enormity of the problem we are addressing, we intend to expand our efforts. We will place corps members in three new sites for the 2008-09 school year: Jacksonville, Indianapolis, and Kansas City.

Over the last six years, Teach For America has expanded from 16 to 26 regions and expects to develop sites in several new regions in the coming years. Teaching in an expansion site is a unique opportunity to build Teach For America's presence in a new part of the country and to assume a corps leadership role in your first year.
