"Teach For America corps members will have a profound and lasting impact on our students and our school system.  More than that, the time the corps members spend in the classroom will equip them with the perspective and skills to be our community’s future leaders."

-John Peyton

As members of a new expansion site, Jacksonville corps members will have the opportunity to influence and lead the region’s movement toward educational equality. There will be numerous chances for new Jacksonville corps members to assume corps leadership positions in the region's first year. Recent charter corps members have valued the unique experience of leading Teach For America's movement in a new area of the country. Like other charter corps before them, Jacksonville corps members will help shape and set the vision for Teach For America’s role within a new community and school system.

Situated in Northeastern Florida, Jacksonville is the 14th largest city in the United States with a population of over 1 million residents. Jacksonville offers corps members a multitude of opportunities, landscapes, and recreational options, and Forbes often ranks this southern hub as of one of the top 10 cities to relocate to and find a job. Jacksonville residents have many communities from which to choose in this widespread city and can even opt to live near beaches along the Atlantic Ocean.

Life

Jacksonville is a conglomeration of many small towns with unique histories and communities. The metropolitan city is informally divided into the Westside, the Eastside, the Northside, and the Southside, all of which surround Downtown Jacksonville. While corps members will be placed in high-need schools in the urban core of the city, corps members can choose to live in any of a variety of neighborhoods ranging from vibrant retail areas to relaxed beach communities to small farming towns.

Whether on field trips with their students or unwinding on the weekend, corps members can explore the range of activities and sights that Jacksonville has to offer. Corps members can fish or partake in water sports at award winning beaches, such as Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville Beach, or Neptune Beach. They can enjoy Jacksonville’s many parks (it has the most park land of any U.S. city), or explore over 1,000 exotic organisms at the Jacksonville Zoo. Corps members can also take in Jacksonville Jaguars’ NFL games at the Alltel Stadium or visit the plethora of art galleries, museums, or theaters in Downtown Jacksonville.

Corps Culture

Corps members will be welcomed by the Jacksonville community - including prominent district, community, and business leaders – all of whom have been vocal about their support of Teach For America. In addition to building partnerships with the school and community leaders, Jacksonville corps members can directly impact the development of regional programming and corps culture. As with all Teach For America regions, Jacksonville corps members can expect to participate in all-corps gatherings, exchange best teaching practices with other corps members of the same grade level or content area, and attend cultural and social gatherings with colleagues and friends.
