Because of its small size, the city of Baltimore fosters close friendships among corps members. It is very common to run into fellow corps members while running everyday errands.

What do you think is the greatest misconception people have about Baltimore?

One of my biggest pet peeves is when people look at me cockeyed, crinkle their face and say, “Baltimore. Really? Have you seen ‘The Wire’?” Baltimore is not New York. It is not LA. It is not made out to be a glamorous city by any media outlet. It is not the hub of business, entertainment or fashion that many other cities are, but Baltimore is also NOT HBO’s “The Wire”. While, to some critics, the television show painted an accurate picture of the city, I argue that accuracy is not synonymous with complete. Crime and violence exist in every major city, even the minor ones, too. But, for Baltimore to be characterized by only crime and violence is entirely inaccurate. Baltimore is full of history and culture. If many would take the time to read between the lines of violence, one would discover a rich history of economics and politics. Some say Baltimore is “up and coming”, but I say it’s already here. Always growing and modernizing, Baltimore was the perfect city for me to move to straight out of college, and the first place I’ve been able to comfortably call home, aside from the house in which I grew up.

What is your everyday life like?

My everyday life on school days looks starkly different from weekends. Knowing that I do my most productive work in the morning, I try to be at school by 7 a.m. each day to prepare for the day. After school, I either go to my master’s classes at Johns Hopkins University, or linger after school for an hour or so before heading home. In the evenings, I regularly go to the gym (an amazing way to clear the head!), go grocery shopping, and cook dinner. Regardless of the school work I choose to take home with me, I always schedule in time for my nightly television shows. I discovered that making time for me each night was a critical component of my success with my students.
