Because of its small size, the city of Baltimore fosters close friendships among corps members. It is very common to run into fellow corps members while running everyday errands.

What is the nightlife/weekend-life like in Baltimore?

Baltimore suits just about any social style; with so many universities in the city, there's a bunch of young people wandering around, either at parties, nightclubs, bars, concerts, underground cafes, museums, or plays. The Ravens and Orioles bring droves of tourists from Boston and New York into town, and the games tend to be affordable, well-attended, and entertaining (if not always victorious). For a slower pace, you can spend weekends working in cafes, wandering through the various neighborhoods, attending festivals, playing soccer or rugby with other corps members at the parks, or attending a house party. Socializing in Baltimore is whatever you want it to be.

What does the achievement gap look like in your school?

The achievement gap looks like sixth graders with kindergarten reading skills and 18-year-old tenth graders who can neither spell nor identify an adverb. However, daunting as it is, it never feels doomed -- my kids are very much alive, very present, and therefore very capable of proving the system wrong.
