Today, corps members are working in 26 regions to ensure their students have the educational opportunities they deserve.

Teach For America 2009 corps

This fall, we will place the largest incoming corps in our history: more than 4,000 new teachers.  We are bringing in more corps members this year than the number of alumni Teach For America produced in its entire first decade. For the 2009-10 school year, 7,300 first and second-year Teach For America corps members will be impacting the lives of 450,000 students in public schools in low-income communities across the country.

The 2009 corps will head to classrooms in 35 regions across the United States, including a record six new sites: Boston, Dallas, Milwaukee, Nashville, Tulsa, and the Twin Cities.

Teach For America recruits on more than 350 of the top college campuses in the country, seeking seniors and recent graduates from all academic majors and backgrounds who have demonstrated outstanding achievement, perseverance, and leadership. This year, a record 35,000 individuals applied to Teach For America, including:

  • Over 5 percent of the senior class at more than 130 colleges and universities.
  • 11 percent of all seniors at Ivy League universities, including nearly 20 percent of African-American, Latino, and Hispanic seniors.

In fact, Teach For America was the No. 1 employer of 2009 graduates at more than 20 schools, including Georgetown University, Spelman College, and the University of Chicago.

Teach For America corps members are a diverse group in every respect, and bring a unique set of perspectives and experiences to their schools and communities. The 2009 corps reflects a wide spectrum of backgrounds and experiences:

  • The more than 4,000 corps members represent all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
  • They represent more than 500 colleges and universities.
  • Almost one-third of incoming corps members identify as people of color.
  • 15 percent earned a graduate degree or held a professional position before joining the corps.
  • 18 percent are the first in their family to attend college.
